On Discernment and Deep Wisdom

I think most people are familiar with the concept of a nudge. You know how it feels —  you’re going about your day, or having a conversation with someone, and you just get this little sense about something. Maybe you know something you have no reason to know, or you go left instead of right, and end up finding something you were looking for. You can’t explain it with your conscious mind, but for whatever reason, following the knowing opens up possibilities you hadn’t considered.

But is the knowing coming from you, or from whatever you call the parts of the world that are more than human? How can you even know?

I’ll be the first to admit that it’s a tricky business, and I’m still figuring out how to articulate it. There’s a feeling though — a strong feeling — a sense of ineffable rightness, like a tuning fork ringing true. I trust that it is my connection to spirit, source, guidance. When I talk about it, I find myself moving my hands to the center line of my body, almost like coming back to a plumb line. It might be different for you. But whatever it is, you’ll know it when you feel it, because it feels steady, and unchanging, and settled.

Once you start tuning into this side of yourself, you might find it has a lot to say. And that’s where the next challenge comes in.

It is so very easy to hear the soft wisdom deep inside you, and then immediately turn away into your logistics brain and try to figure it out. While that part of the brain is very helpful in its own way, it tends to drown out the softer voice of guidance, and you can lose the message without realizing it.

Staying with that soft wisdom, intentionally setting aside the logistics part of your brain, and just being with it takes practice, and a capacity to sit in discomfort if this tuning in isn’t a natural part of your day. All totally doable, with some practice. And very much worth it, at least in my experience. If you can manage it, it’s often the door to things you could have never consciously planned for or controlled.

Try This:

  • You might start by creating more time where you can let your logic brain drop so much tasking and allow more space for something else to come in. If complete stillness seems out of reach, how about single tasking instead of multi-tasking, physically and mentally? Be curious about what little thoughts or nudges come in.

  • Try putting together potential nudges with physical sensations. For instance, I get this little, very subtle thing, at the back of my neck from some nudges. I’m familiar enough with it now, that I know better and usually DO better at not speeding right past it. (Except for that one time, a few days ago, when I did ignore it because it seemed silly. The end result was I did indeed get into a vehicle to find that it wouldn’t start due to an electrical issue. Merp. :)

  • If all this space and sensation stuff feels like it’s a big leap, start smaller. There’s no need to leap into some preconceived notion of what spirit led, higher self driven, wise guide download looks like if you just slow down and notice BETTER. Take the pressure off doing it right, and just be willing to listen. What feels more like a whisper of connection? Maybe it’s a fleeting sensation in your gut, something that catches your eye, a quiet thought in the back of your head?

As always, I’m keen to join you in this exploration of connection with your spiritual side. My monthly Settle group is a great place to practice. You can check it out here.
